Reaching the Wellspring Within
Community Gathering Every Month in Orlando
On the first Monday of each month, beginning at 7:30 PM. There is a public event at Phoenix Services. These events give us the opportunity to gather with friends, exchange ideas, review various topics about personal growth and evolution and to introduce new material as well.
This month's program:
The Gentle Art of Verbal Self Defense
Verbal abuse is all round us. Sometimes it's obvious, and other times it's more subtle .. but in either case it can be hurtful and even injurious. Bullying and insulting are two examples that we are generally aware of, while patronizing and dismissal are "sneakier". If you come home from your job feeling more worn out than your work should cause ... you just might be suffering some abuse that you aren't noticing. Nurses have reported this experience when they've worked with insensitive doctors.
So how can you recognize it ... and what can you do about it?
Way back in the '70's, a linguist (and one time associate of NLP's John Grinder) proposed an answer that has stood the test of time and is as useful today as ever.
Suzette Haden Elgin, in her work The Gentle Art of Verbal Self Defense has described 8 Verbal Attack Patterns - The linguistic structures behind most verbal attacks.
But the Gentle Art of Verbal Self Defense isn't about striking back.It is a a system that will help you identify these patterns instantly, along with corresponding responses that you can use to diffuse the attack and create more meaningful interactions.
In this evening program we will teach you the foundations of this Gentle Art System, including the 8 Patterns and responses. Put them to work e in your own life and easily share with others as well.
